What Flux Ventures is: Dreams and Plans

Written circa 2016. A lot of people have been asking me what Flux Ventures is, what the plans for the future are and what I envision Flux Ventures to become. I decided to write this blog post to answer these questions and hope that this serves as a memoir when Flux Ventures starts trading on…

A little bit of history about Flux Ventures, LLC.

Flux Ventures was envisioned to emulate the Virgin Group.

I am a big fan of what Richard Branson has done with the Virgin brand and I want to follow his footsteps.

Flux Ventures’ mission is to disrupt multiple industries and become a market leader in them. We don’t fear any big players (perhaps because we’re naive or just stubborn). Eventually, we want Flux to become a worldwide recognizable brand associated with innovation and high quality.

Throughout the past year and a half, we have focused on developing skills that allow us to discover market inefficiencies on which to capitalize. We are big on A/B testing and automation. Flux Ventures is currently valued at $6-9M.

Miles Anthony is my co-founder.

Current companies

Flux Chargers

Flux Portable Charger

In June 2015, during the StartupUCLA summer accelerator, we launched our first product and company: a portable charger named the Flux Charger.

Although most people considered the portable charger market to be very saturated and dominated by big corporations, we saw potential to innovate on branding and with a memorable form factor.

In less than a year, we captured a very sizable portion of the market and gained #1 rank across the board in over 70 countries and publications like Yahoo Tech, Digital Trends, MobileMag, GizMag and others. Not to mention dozens of 5-star reviews on Amazon.

Flux Chargers is evolving into Flux Electronics over the next few months to include more consumer electronics under the Flux brand. This company is set to make over $1M in revenue in the next 12 months.

Taking the knowledge and reputation that we built from Flux Chargers, we expanded our brand by providing the services that we saw people needed the most: development and social media marketing.

Thus, in December 2015, we launched Flux.LA a software and design consulting firm that specializes in SEO, design and marketing. We’ve had the privilege to work with companies and organizations like Google Glass, UCLA, and other Fortune 1000 companies and startups.

Young Slacker Media

Flux Ventures is also in charge of Young Slacker Media, a very profitable snapchat channel that helps connect brands with younger audiences through clever, raw and unedited marketing.

Although the Young Slacker channel started mainly as my personal hobby, I saw an opportunity to monetize on my audience so I decided to build this Young Slacker persona about my life.

Young Slacker owns So Influential and Future Sharks.

Flux Capital

Flux Capital is our venture capital fund.

With this venture, we like to fund projects that resemble the same hustling values that we praise at Flux Ventures.

Following the steps of Buffett, we only invest in projects that we fully understand.

Moreover, we only invest if we know for a fact the founders are bauses, which means never using excuses and using all the tools (i.e. Google, connections) to learn how to do something and get it done.

My favorite investment thus far has been Everipedia, a fast growing company that recently received a $30M Series A.

Big vision

“So Alejandro, where do you envision Flux Ventures in 5 and 10 years? What other companies do you plan to build?”

I am a very inquisitive and excited person; and so is everyone on the Flux team.

Every time we have a meeting we like to bounce off ideas of what other ventures we would like to start.

So here are some of the ideas I have for companies in the future:

Ever since I was 14, I wanted to build my own restaurant chain. Not a junk-food chain but rather a high quality and healthy fast food chain. The restaurants I look up to right now are: Eatsa (they employ “no” humans) and Cava (really good food and perfect branding).

Furthermore, to follow that trend, I would like to produce a superfood product sold at stores, like a healthy and not overpriced cereal bar. Pardon the pun, but I would like to raise the bar on cereal bars.

I would also like to create my own accelerator. I learned a lot during the summer at StartupUCLA. Now, I want to teach founders how to sell and help their startups grow so that later on Flux Capital can make an institutional investment in their companies.

Other companies include: Flux Real Estate, Flux Records (just like the OG Virgin Records since I really want to release my own rap song), Flux Hotels and a mobile app/ SaaS product (because it wouldn’t be a real startup unless I am trying to acquire millions of users, would it?).

Here are some other great ideas that I might not have the time to pursue.

Last words

I am Flux and Flux is me.

There is nothing that I enjoy more than working towards this dream.

It is because I want Flux Ventures to become the worldwide brand I just described that I am able to put 10, 14 even sometimes 17 hours of work per day.

I sincerely want Flux to transform the world. And I won’t stop until it happens.
